AutoCAD Acts like it is Installed however it is not

Have you ever ran into a situation where you go to install AutoCAD and it acts as if it is already installed but is not actually installed.

If this is the second time you are installing on the PC, In most cases the Installer rolls back and sets everything back to the way it should when you start the Installer. However in some cases this does not happen.When you try to install AutoCAD it acts as though the product is already installed.

To reset the installed we have to remove some registry entries. Before proceeding backup the registry.

In case the problem occurred when the last installation was aborted before completion, then search for these paths in the Registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under each of these look for the Product Name and remove any keys from the GUID level. We can simply search the entire registry for values that points to non existing installation and remove them.

If the install log shows that the install initialization is detecting the existence of a .mst file and cannot proceed because the .mst file. then search the registry for string of the .mst file name and delete that key from the GUID level.

If the log file says the failure is due to custom action, CheckForACADExistance, then browse to the installation directory , usually C:\Program Files\Auto-desk\auto-CAD and remove the auto-cad directory.

Enable hardware acceleration in Autocad

If the video card that supports OpenGL, improve graphics performance and productivity when working with 3D models by turning on hardware acceleration. This helps overall performance, not just with 3D work.

However, some video cards and drivers that support OpenGL are not compatible with AutoCAD when hardware acceleration is turned on. This incompatibility may result in unexpected problems. To test for optimized working conditions in specific environment, toggle hardware acceleration on and off.

There are several ways to toggle hardware acceleration in AutoCAD-based products. Try one of the following methods:

  • Enter the GRAPHICSCONFIG command and click the Hardware Configuration button.
  • Enter the 3DCONFIG command and click the Hardware Configuration button.
  • Enter OPTIONS on the command line or choose it from the Application menu to open the Options dialog box. On the System tab, click the Graphics Performance button. Then click the Hardware Acceleration button to turn it off or on.
  • Click the GRAPHICSCONFIG performance button in the lower-right corner of the AutoCAD application window.

There may be a delay the first time using GRAPHICSCONFIG or 3DCONFIG or when clicking the performance button.

Note: The interface options may differ, depending on product and product version. AutoCAD LT 2011 and earlier do not support hardware acceleration and do not have 3DCONFIG.

Creating Batch File to Map Network Drive

When you have a large user base its not practical to go around mapping Network drives for each person. You can either do it through domain controller Group policy or by the use of batch files. You provides the user with batch file when clicked it will map the drives for them automatically.

Batch file is also useful when for some unknown reason drive map gets disconnected each time the computer restarts. You can put the batch file in startup configuration.

to accomplish this,

  • Open notepad and type following.
  1. @echo Create new L: drive mapping
    @net use L: \\ServerName\Folder\Folder\FolderA /persistent:yes
    @echo Create new K: drive mapping
    @net use K: \\ServerName\Folder\Folder\FolderB /persistent:yes
    :exit
    @pause
  • Then save the file with .bat extension. Use any name.bat
  • Now navigate to where you save it and click on it
  • A command prompt should appear, Then Press any key to exit

  1. Create new L: Drive mapping >> create a new drive map with letter L.
  2. net use L: network path >> use drive map L for the specified network path
  3. Persistent:yes >> this attribute tells the system that the map is permanent.
  4. @pause >> to tell the cmd to not quit after executing the batch file.

MS-Office file extensions re-association

Sometimes you may have to install a new Microsoft office when there is another version of it is already installed. For example you may have a MS Office 2013 installed, then for some reason you are installing MS Office 2016 version.

Up to this point everything works just fine. But when I decided to uninstall 2013, all file association was gone with it.

i.e; all “.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx” files will not open automatically on their respective applications.

In such cases we will need to re-associate those files extensions’ with MS-Office.

Right click on an office file. For example “example.doc” then go to properties.
In the general tab their is an option called “open with”. Click the “change” button beside it. Navigate to

C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\root\office16\

This is the installation directory of you MS-Office. We will find all of the installed components such as excel,word, outlook etc.
in our case we will just select “word.exe”. then click “ok”.

The file extension .doc is now connected to word.exe.

After doing the above, word.exe is recognized as a desktop app. That is, if you want to associate word with any other file type you don’t need to go to the directory. Just go to file properties and click “change” you will see “word” already displayed in the given list.

do the same steps for excel as well.

EASY SOLUTION

File associations in windows are stored in the Registry, which is a database of programs and the file types that they may be used to open. All files that can be opened using Microsoft Office applications are automatically associated with the proper office program when you install Microsoft Office. If you’d like to re-associate Office files with the proper Office program, then you only need to issue a few simple run commands.

Click window key + R on the keyboard to open the RUN command box. Then run following commands to re-associate each app to its file extensions.

winword /regserver
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver
